A Concentration Gradient in Corn Stalks

چکیده

In a recent paper, Evelyn I. Fernald 1 has shown that the osmotic concentration of the sap of different portions of stems is correlated with the tendency of buds to develop on those portions. She has found by freezing point measurements on the expressed sap that in actively growing stems of privet, chestnut, Pkiladelphus, and Bryophyllum there is a concentration gradient, the highest concentration being in the apical portions, the lowest in the basal portions. In connection with these findings of Fernald on dicotyledonous stems, some measurements of the specific gravity of juice expressed from successive internodes of the corn stalk may be of interest. The plants used in this study were all vigorous, 8 to 11 feet high, with large but immature ears. The juice from single internodes was expressed for the specific gravity measurements, except in the upper portions of the stalks where it was always necessary to take two or more adjacent internodes as one sample in order to obtain enough juice. Occasionally, also, the two basal internodes were expressed together, as indicated by brackets in the table. After removal of the tough cortex, the tissue was thoroughly crushed in a food chopper. The juice was squeezed from the. pulp by hand through a muslin cloth, and filtered until clear through a folded filter paper. Precautions against evaporation were observed throughout. The specific gravity of the juice was determined by means of a small pycnometer in the form of a glass capsule with capillary intake and outlet tubes. A second weighing of the pycnometer filled with juice refiltered through the same paper constituted a check on each measure-

Adsorption and Desorption of Phosphorus and Nitrogen by Immersed Stalks

Adsorption and desorption of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) by stalk residues may influence the concentrations of P and N in runoff. A laboratory study was conducted to measure the effects of P and N constituents in solution on adsorption and desorption of P and N by corn, soybean, and wheat stalk residues. Experimental variables included type of stalk material (corn, soybean, and wheat), inor...

Field Effects of Bt Corn on the Impact of Parasitoids and Pathogens on European Corn Borer in Illinois

The European corn borer completes two to three generations per year in Illinois. Fourth and fifth instars tunnel in stalks, causing disruption in the flow of water and nutrients in the plants. The cavities created by the borers may weaken stalks and ear shanks, resulting in lodging or dropped ears. Before the advent of Bt corn, producers attempted to control European corn borers, if the need ar...

Effect of Torrefaction on the Properties of Corn Stalk to Enhance Solid Fuel Qualities

This study presents the effects of torrefaction on the basic characteristics of corn stalks. Corn stalks were torrefied in a horizontal tubular reactor at temperatures ranging from 150 °C to 400 °C, for torrefaction periods varying from 0 min to 50 min. The torrefied corn stalk products were characterized in terms of their elemental composition, energy yield, ash content, and volatile fraction....

Physical Properties of Corn Residues

Corn residues (cobs, leaves and stalks) are abundantly available renewable materials that can be used as an energy source in gasification and combustion systems. Proper understanding of the physical properties of these materials is necessary for their use in thermochemical conversion processes. The physical properties (moisture content, particle size, bulk density and porosity) of corn cobs, le...

Identification, Molecular Characterization and Evaluation of Some Ruminal Bacteria That Catalyze and Degrade Plant Cellulosic Materials

In the last few years there was a growing economic awareness about plant wastes and use it in compost production or in feeding of farm animals, some of these wastes are useless and cause a lot of problems in Egyptian environment. This study was designed to isolate, identify and evaluate some ruminal bacterial isolates to facilitate the in vitro degradation of certain local agro-industrial waste...
